Congratulations to 2010 alumnus, Joey Carter, on his selection to the Ben Lippen Athletic Hall of Fame!

While at Ben Lippen, Joey excelled in both baseball and football, earning honors at the school, state, and regional levels. As a standout quarterback, Joey racked up some impressive stats: 5,179 passing yards, 43 passing touchdowns, 1000+ rushing yards, and 14 rushing touchdowns. This earned him 1^st Team All-Region and SCISA All-Statehonors as well as a SCISA Shrine Bowl appearance. During those years, Reggie Shaw had a significant impact on Joey. He recalls Shaw as an excellent leader and coach who set a great example for his team to become responsible men, future husbands, and fathers. By the end of Joey’s senior season as quarterback, the team went 9-3, the best record for the BL football program at that time.

Out on the diamond, Joey was a 3-year starter holding down right field for the Falcons. He earned All-Region and a spot in the SCISA North-South All-Star baseball game, but the highlight was bringing home a State Championship in 2008, BL’s first in that sport. At the beginning of the ‘08 season, Joey and the team were confident that they had what it took to earn a State title. The stacked roster was the most talented Joey had played alongside at Ben Lippen, and many went on to compete in college. In addition to the experience of eight starting seniors, Coach Brent Walsh, knew how to develop a championship mindset in his athletes. Joey, as a sophomore, helped the team clinch the final win against Northwood in the Championship game. Of all the great coaches Joey played under, Brent Walsh stands out with his ability to capitalize on the team’s talent to win.

In recognition of Joey’s character and impact on BL athletics, he earned the esteemed Patterson Award his senior year. Upon graduation in 2010, Joey went on to play football at North Greenville University. After four years as a Crusader, he returned to Falcon football as a wide receivers coach under Derek White. He valued this opportunity to coach his brother Wil and be a part of the program that helped raise him.

Thinking back on his time at Ben Lippen, Joey fondly remembers the unique culture. He appreciates the way teachers set students up for success and genuinely care for them beyond grades. The BL athletic philosophy taught him that it isn’t just about playing for a win. There is a higher purpose: honor the Lord in the way you compete, whether you win or lose on the scoreboard. Every member of the team has a unique role to play, and collaboration with an "all in" attitude is key to success on the field and in life.

Joey currently lives in Greenville, South Carolina with his wife Noelle and their two sons Jay (2 ½ years) and Reeves (1 year).
