Beloved Ben Lippen Guitar Teacher Chris Essig Answers the Call to Missions in Panama

After 13 years of faithful service, mentorship, and musical excellence at Ben Lippen School, beloved Guitar and Strings Teacher Chris Essig is saying goodbye as he steps into a new calling on the mission field in Panama.

Throughout his time at Ben Lippen, Essig has left a lasting impact on students, families, and fellow faculty members through his passion for music, leadership, and Christ-centered teaching. With degrees in Music Performance from Geneva College and the University of South Carolina, Essig brought both professional expertise and heartfelt dedication into every classroom rehearsal and concert performance.

Reflecting on his years at Ben Lippen, Essig shared that the role shaped him “personally, spiritually, and professionally.”

“Personally, I have grown in my maturity as a leader, teacher, and coach to young people,” he said. “I have learned the importance of consistency, communication, organization, and even pivoting when needed.”

Spiritually, he said his time at Ben Lippen strengthened his trust in God’s faithfulness.

“I have learned to trust in the One who is always consistent and always loving and full of grace,” Essig said.

One scripture that guided him throughout his journey at Ben Lippen was Philippians 4:6–7, a passage reminding believers to trust the Lord with every circumstance and experience His peace.

Among his many cherished memories, one moment stands above the rest. At his final concert on April 23, students surprised him with a deeply personal gift — a guitar signed by each of his students.

“It was incredibly meaningful,” Essig said. “Also, receiving a Superior with Distinction with my tiny 12-person orchestra last year was unforgettable.”

Beyond musical accomplishments, Essig says what made Ben Lippen truly special was the sense of authentic Christian community.

“Ben Lippen was a HUGE part of my life and my family’s,” he shared. “I am so grateful for the opportunities to grow and thrive here. It is a place to be real, to live out our faith, to learn and teach about God’s world, and to learn from others. It will always hold a special place in our hearts.”

As he looks ahead, Essig is eager to see how God will use music as a ministry tool in Panama.

“I want to use music to point others to Christ and become faithful musicians and spiritual leaders themselves,” he said.

While the Ben Lippen community will deeply miss Mr. Essig’s joyful spirit, servant leadership, and musical influence, his legacy will continue through the countless students he inspired over the years. The school celebrates the Essig family's next chapter and prays for God’s blessing as they begin this exciting mission journey.
