Discovering Academic Support at Ben Lippen School

The Academic Support Center (ASC) at Ben Lippen School may seem tucked away in the middle school cottages, but it plays a significant role in supporting our students’ academic journeys. This center is a resource hub for middle and high school students, offering tailored support to address individual learning needs and promote success. Under the leadership of Dr. Leah Danford, the Individual Learning Center (ILC) team has recently welcomed two dedicated Academic Specialists: Mrs. Chick for high school and Mrs. Mathew for middle school. Together, they provide vital resources and guidance for students, whether they need support with executive functioning skills, study skills, or adapting to the demands of middle and high school life.

High School Services
During high school resource blocks, students receive structured support to help them succeed academically and develop essential life skills. Services include:

- Reviewing assignments to ensure clarity and alignment with teacher expectations.

- Breaking down assignments into manageable steps, fostering timely completion.

- Training in using calendars or planners to stay organized with due dates and daily tasks.

- Practicing self-advocacy to enhance students’ independence and communication skills.

- Engaging in check-ins to monitor task completion and strengthen accountability.

Additionally, students learn study techniques and strategies tailored to support individual learning styles, while setting goals that encourage proactive study habits.

Middle School Services
In middle school, the ASC offers support during resource periods, focusing on foundational skills that support academic success. Key services provided are:

- Agenda checks to identify and organize homework, tests, and projects.

- Guidance on planning and completing tasks in manageable stages.

- Instruction on time management to cultivate independence.

- Review of assignments to clarify understanding and offer further explanation as needed.

- Small group sessions to develop social skills, as appropriate, helping students grow in confidence.

These sessions aim to foster foundational skills that improve both classroom performance and achievement test outcomes.

The impact of the ASC and ILC on our students is evident, equipping them with skills for success beyond the classroom. We are grateful for the commitment of Mrs. Chick, Mrs. Mathew, and Dr. Danford, whose work continues to enrich the lives of our students and reinforce our mission of empowering each individual to reach their full potential.
