Engaging Hearts and Minds: The Intentional Changes in Bible Education at Ben Lippen

You may have noticed that the High School Bible Department has recently introduced significant changes. What might not be as clear are the reasons behind these changes. We believe it’s important to share the heart and motivation behind this shift, so you can understand how it impacts your student’s spiritual and academic growth.

At the start of last school year, the Bible department transitioned to a seminar-style model for its courses. This change wasn’t sudden; it was the result of years of careful development and planning, during which we created Bible standards that reflect the mission of Ben Lippen School. Much like our English department’s approach, we now offer semester-long courses centered on specific topics or themes, all of which align with these academic Bible standards.

Every freshman begins with two foundational courses, Progress of Redemption and The Life of Christ. Afterward, students have the opportunity to choose from a variety of courses based on their personal interests. This journey culminates in a senior-year “Capstone” course, where students synthesize their learning in a personal project that reflects their understanding of Biblical truths.

We’re thrilled with this new direction because it helps us better meet students where they are. Over the years, we’ve seen the need for a Bible program that fosters deeper engagement and greater autonomy. By allowing students to choose courses that interest them, we’re encouraging what we call “buy-in”—students become more invested in their learning. Additionally, the new model offers a diverse range of courses, bringing together students from different grades, which enriches the learning environment.

The foundation laid during the freshman year ensures that all students have a strong grasp of core Biblical principles. From there, they can explore topics like Ethics, Doctrines, Spiritual Disciplines, and more. The final Capstone course challenges them to apply their Biblical understanding to real-world issues, careers, or ethical questions, solidifying their personal beliefs and worldview.

Ultimately, our hope is that as students explore these courses, they will encounter the wisdom and truth of Christ in every area of study. Our prayer is that this deepens their relationship with Him and transforms their lives in light of the gospel. As Romans 11:36 reminds us, “For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.”
