Faculty Spotlight: Advancing STEM & AI at Ben Lippen

For nearly two decades, Technology and Robotics Instructor David Rios has been equipping Ben Lippen students to thrive in an increasingly digital and innovative world. What began as traditional computer classes has grown into a dynamic STEM program where students explore robotics, artificial intelligence, computer vision, machine learning, and more. Mr. Rios brings an exceptional depth of knowledge to the classroom. He has completed prestigious AI and robotics training through Stanford, Columbia University, MIT, and various government agencies, ensuring that our students learn directly from a leader engaged at the forefront of emerging technology. Ben Lippen has also partnered with Amazon for professional development and curriculum, and developed partnerships with iRobot for mentoring our students involved in Robotics.

Throughout his career, Mr. Rios has been selected for numerous highly competitive national opportunities, including the 2024 U.S. Space Force Leadership Experience, where he was one of only 24 educators nationwide chosen for a week of advanced instruction at Cape Canaveral and other Space Force installations, including the opportunity to witness a rocket launch and the landing of a SpaceX Falcon Heavy. He has also represented Ben Lippen at an MIT robotics conference, where our school was recognized as an exemplar among top schools worldwide and in the U.S. Additionally, he was selected for an intensive artificial intelligence program supported by a Department of Defense scholarship through The Coding School. The curriculum was accredited, facilitated, and validated by Stanford, advancing the technological expertise he continues to bring to campus. Additionally, Ben Lippen became the only high school in the nation to teach an official Computer Vision curriculum thanks to his involvement in that field. His leadership has contributed to our award-winning Robotics Team and ongoing partnerships with U.S. Space Force and Air Force personnel who visit his classes to share real-world innovations.

Mr. Rios has also explored the development of ethical AI guidelines through a unique opportunity in his AI coursework with the Mark Cuban organization, emphasizing the need for rapidly evolving technology to remain aligned with a biblical worldview. “We can’t run away from AI,” he shares. “People who know AI and use it correctly will replace those who don’t. We want our students to learn how to use it properly—to build, to innovate, and to solve advanced problems in ways that honor God.” At the heart of his work is a passion for equipping students to become creators and problem-solvers who use their gifts for God’s glory.

The technology and robotics program that Mr. Rios built from the ground up now begins in Lower School and progresses through hands-on engineering, programming, intelligent machine design, and advanced AI applications. This year, Ben Lippen proudly fielded three robotics teams, including our first-ever girls-only team, which is only the second of its kind in the entire state. In their inaugural season, these young women are already excelling and inspiring future Falcons to get involved in STEM.

Looking ahead, Mr. Rios hopes to expand course offerings to include cybersecurity, game design, introductory AI and machine learning, and quantum computing, ensuring students gain the tools and skills needed to confidently pursue emerging career paths. Through his leadership, Ben Lippen remains committed to equipping innovative thinkers who steward technology wisely and make a positive impact in a rapidly changing world.
