Leading the Way: Jay Sauls Represents Ben Lippen in State Leadership Program

Ben Lippen senior Jay Sauls recently completed the Governor’s Future Leadership Program, a highly selective high school internship offered through the Governor’s Office. The program is designed for rising juniors and seniors across South Carolina, with students nominated by their teachers based on leadership potential and overall fit. This year, Jay was one of just nine students—representing both public and private schools statewide—chosen to participate.

The Governor’s Future Leadership Program is designed for students to gain valuable insight into state government, exploring everything from public sector careers and resources to the legislative process. Participants had the unique opportunity to meet with a wide range of state leaders and professionals, including the State HR Director, Comptroller General, representatives from McGuireWoods Consulting, the Manager for Talent Programs and Training at BMW Manufacturing in Spartanburg, the President of the Senate, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Senate Democratic Minority Leader, the Chair of the House Education and Public Works Committee, a member of the House Ways and Means Committee, and the Governor.

Through these experiences, students developed a deeper understanding of how legislation is created and passed, as well as how the executive and legislative branches collaborate with lobbyists and trade associations. They also explored current and future career opportunities in state government, hearing from professionals in fields such as information technology, healthcare, finance, and law.

Now in its second year, the Governor’s Future Leadership Program continues to equip students with a deeper understanding of public service while inspiring the next generation of leaders in South Carolina. We are incredibly proud of Jay for this outstanding accomplishment and the initiative he has shown in pursuing this unique opportunity.
