Patrick Major ’65: A Legacy of Faith and Friendship

As Ben Lippen celebrates 85 years of Christian education, Patrick Major’s story connects the school’s early days in Asheville with its community in Columbia today. A proud member of the class of 1965, Patrick not only looks back with gratitude but also serves his classmates as their reunion coordinator, helping plan their 60th gathering this October. This milestone reflects both the enduring friendships and the lasting impact of a Ben Lippen education.

Patrick’s journey with Ben Lippen began in 8th grade when his missionary parents entrusted him to the school they deeply respected, one his father knew well through Columbia Bible College (now CIU). After briefly returning to India for 10th grade, Patrick came back to Asheville for his junior and senior years, this time bringing his younger sister along. Ben Lippen quickly became his “home away from home.”

“My classmates truly were my new brothers and sisters,” Patrick shares. “The bell schedule, dorm life, daily devotions, and shared mealtimes were all part of a meaningful rhythm that shaped our faith and friendships.”

Patrick remembers suiting up for varsity basketball, soccer, and baseball, as well as enjoying the occasional formal social event, all cherished memories from his school years on the mountain of trust. But more than the activities, it was the intentional spiritual life that shaped him most. “BL deepened my understanding of my relationship with my Savior. Bible classes, chapels, and devotional time all helped grow my faith and desire to serve wherever God led.”

That desire initially inspired Patrick to dream of teaching national pastors in India. However, God directed his steps elsewhere, leading him to BIOLA University, where he met his wife, and into a 41-year career in Christian education. His roles included teacher, principal, and service on the ACSI Executive Board, where he even worked alongside former Ben Lippen principals A.C. Fortosis and Jack Layman.

Now, decades after those unforgettable years in Asheville, Patrick is helping his classmates reconnect for their 60th reunion, not in the mountains of North Carolina, but right here in Columbia.

“This year we wanted to not only get together but also show appreciation to the school, as it is now, for the impact it’s had on our lives,” Patrick explains.

He sees today’s Ben Lippen students and faculty carrying forward the same Christ-centered mission he experienced in the 1960s. “Whether boarding or day, the essence of BL is the same, where Christ is lifted up and His Word is integrated into all of life.”

Today, Patrick is enjoying retirement, serving in his church, spending time with family and grandkids, and even hitting the golf course. His love for Ben Lippen’s mission and the friendships he formed there more than 60 years ago remain strong. To today’s students and young alumni, he offers this encouragement:

“Never lose sight of the challenge to pursue the more abundant life in Christ. That’s what Ben Lippen pointed me toward.”
