A New Way to Learn: TPRS Transforms Language Learning at Ben Lippen

At Ben Lippen High School, we are excited to begin using Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling (TPRS) in our World Language classrooms. TPRS is a highly engaging and research-based approach that helps students acquire a new language in much the same way they first learned their native one—through meaningful interaction, repetition, and stories that bring the language to life. Instead of memorizing lists of words or rules, students are immersed in the sounds and structures of the language in a way that feels natural, enjoyable, and lasting.

Through this new initiative, our goal is for students not only to understand vocabulary and grammar but also to think, speak, and create in their new language with confidence. By using storytelling, conversation, and active participation, our teachers will invite students into experiences that make language both fun and memorable. We believe this will deepen their appreciation for other cultures while equipping them with communication skills that will serve them for a lifetime.
