End of Quarter 1

October 10, 2019 Upper School News

Dear Upper School Parents,

As we approach the end of the first quarter, I wanted to let you know about the timing for release of report cards as well as a few other important reminders.  The quarter ends on Wednesday, October 16.

RenWeb Availability

RenWeb will remain accessible for parents and students as teachers finalize grades for the quarter. Please understand that as teachers enter grades your child’s average will fluctuate.

Report Cards

Report Cards are scheduled to be released on Wednesday, October 23. You will receive an email once grades are final and report cards are ready.

Credit for high school classes in grades 7-12 is awarded at the end of each semester. The semester grade is made up of grades from quarter 1 (40%), quarter 2 (40%) and the semester exam (20%).

The cumulative GPA reported on report cards will NOT UPDATE after quarter 1 because no credit was earned during the quarter. The GPA will update after semester 1 grades have been calculated in December. Please note that this GPA is cumulative for all high school credit earned, not each semester in isolation.

Academic Eligibility for Extracurricular Activities

Eligibility for winter sports and activities is determined by report card grades from the first quarter. Students must pass (60% average or better) six courses each quarter AND maintain a 2.0 quarter GPA (70 average for students in Grades 6-8) to participate in athletics and/or co-curricular activities (sports, fine arts, and clubs). Students who have a 2.0 GPA but have a failing grade in individual subjects will be considered on a case-by-case basis by the athletic director and the principal.

Ben Lippen School is a member of the South Carolina Independent School Association (SCISA) and must comply with their academic standards for athletics. Per SCISA rules, students in grades 9-12 must take and pass at least four (4) core courses or five (5) of any courses each grading period or semester to be eligible. After each grading period, any student who falls below this standard will become automatically ineligible and will not be able to participate in any team activities (practice, travel, and games) for the remainder of the quarter.

Academic Probation

Students will be placed on academic probation if they fail two or more courses in one quarter OR if their quarter GPA falls below 2.0 (70 average for students in Grades 6-8). Students on academic probation are required to have an initial meeting with a guidance counselor, who will establish an accountability plan that must be implemented by the student and his/her family at home to ensure academic improvement. If deemed necessary, a tutor will be suggested to assist in deficient subject areas.

Honor Roll

An Honor Roll list will be compiled for the Upper School consisting of all students in Grades 6-8 who have achieved an A (90% or greater) in all their core courses and all students in Grades 9-12 who have achieved an A (90% or greater) in all their academic subjects.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns please call or email me.
