Middle School Mock Trial Information Meeting

August 14, 2019 Upper School News

We are excited to continue the Ben Lippen Mock Trial program this fall! The middle school program for 6th through 8th-grade students will begin next week.

There will be an information meeting for middle school students and parents at 3:30 on Thursday, August 22. All students and parents interested in participating or just learning more are encouraged to attend. (We understand that many students are also participating in other extracurricular activities, and this is fine! If you would like information, but cannot make the information meeting, please reach out to Jay Thompson. Many of the mock trial participants also participate with athletic teams and other activities.)

The Middle School Mock Trial program is an interscholastic team competition presented by the South Carolina Bar. Students playing the roles of attorneys and witnesses for both sides of a fictional legal case will prepare and compete against one another to try the case in court. Students conduct the trial in an actual courtroom, usually presided over by a real state or federal judge. The students are guided in their case through support of their teacher and attorney coaches. The program teaches the United States legal system, due process, and trial procedure and advocacy, incorporating the skills of public speaking, debate, critical thinking and problem analysis, theater and acting, and forensics. Teams first try the case against each other at regional competitions in November. Teams are critiqued and scored based on their understanding and application of the legal issues and procedure as well as the quality of their presentation and their competitive interaction with the opposing teams. The top two teams from each regional competition advance to the state championship in December.

Practices are expected to begin after school during the week of August 26 and will be either one or two afternoons per week, and we will make efforts to coordinate so that students can still participate in athletics or other extracurricular activities.

If your student is interested in participating or if you would like more information, please notify Mr. Thompson at or Mrs. Strickland at
