Middle School: Report Cards

March 18, 2022 Upper School News

Dear Middle School parents,

Good morning! Here are a few notes about reports cards that will be released later this morning.

Credit for high school classes in grades 8-12 is awarded at the end of each semester.

“I” stands for an incomplete grade. Once your student has completed their work the report card will be updated with the final quarter 3 grade.

Academic Eligibility for Extracurricular Activities

Eligibility for spring sports and activities is determined by report card grades from the third quarter. Students must pass (60% average or better) six courses each quarter AND maintain a 2.0 quarter GPA (70 average for students in Grades 6-8) to participate in athletics and/or co-curricular activities (sports, fine arts, and clubs). Students who have a 2.0 GPA but have a failing grade in individual subjects will be considered on a case-by-case basis by the athletic director and the principal.

Ben Lippen School is a member of the South Carolina Independent School Association (SCISA) and must comply with their academic standards for athletics. Per SCISA rules, students in grades 9-12 must take and pass at least four (4) core courses or five (5) of any courses each grading period or semester to be eligible. After each grading period, any student who falls below this standard will become automatically ineligible and will not be able to participate in any team activities (practice, travel, and games) for the remainder of the quarter.

Academic Probation

Students will be placed on academic probation if they fail two or more courses in one quarter OR if their quarter GPA falls below 2.0 (70 average for students in Grades 6-8). Students on academic probation are required to have an initial meeting with a guidance counselor, who will establish an accountability plan that must be implemented by the student and his/her family at home to ensure academic improvement. Students will be required to attend weekly meetings.

Honor Roll

A Quarter 3 Honor Roll will be compiled for the Middle School. The “A Honor Roll” list will consist of students in Grades 5-8 who have achieved an A (90% or greater) in all of their core courses (English, Math, Science, History, and Bible). The “A/B Honor Roll” list will consist of students in Grades 5-8 who have achieved all A’s and B’s (80% or greater) in their core courses.

If you have a question or concern about one of your child’s grades, please contact the teacher. If I can help in any way, don’t hesitate to contact me.
