What’s new in Science at Ben Lippen?
CNA Program
Did you know that Ben Lippen High School launched a Health Science Academy this year? It has been a busy semester for our first course—Health Science 1. This elective course is an introduction to the five career pathways that fall within the health science cluster: Health Informatics, Therapeutics, Diagnostics, Support Services, and Biotechnology. Topics of discussion included healthcare trends, professional skills, communication, workplace safety, legal/ethical issues in healthcare, basic medical terminology, medical mathematical conversions, and technical skills. Most recently, students chose a specific healthcare profession to research and presented their topic to the class in professional attire.
The most exciting news is the Health Science Academy received final approval in November for a South Carolina Certified Nurse Aide Training site. Students continuing with this course next semester and fulfilling the requirements will be eligible to take the national test and earn their SC Nurse Aide Certification. STEM Program
The Ben Lippen STEM program put its own twist on the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade! After reading “Balloons Over Broadway,” a story about the puppeteer who invented the famous balloons, our third graders set out to create their own memorable floats. To put into practice all the creativity and engineering skills they’ve learned during this project, the students had to work together to design their very own special balloons—including a dinosaur, an elf, and more—which were then attached to our DASH robots and paraded down the hallways of the lower school.
